The goal of the Grow Whidbey apprenticeship program is to give motivated individuals the skills and knowledge needed to become growers and teachers in the field of sustainable community agriculture.
Grow Whidbey evolved out the Community Gardening Leadership Training, and is now a collaboration between the South Whidbey School District Farm and Garden Program and the Good Cheer Food Bank.
There will be three apprentices in the program:
- School Farm/Garden Curriculum Apprentice will primarily focus on teaching and curriculum development for farm/garden-based education.
- School Farm/Garden Production Apprentice will primarily focus on food production in a school farm/garden setting.
- Good Cheer Food Bank Apprentice who will work at the Good Cheer Food Bank Garden and the Big ACRE.
Apprentices will spend the majority of their time at their designated project sites, but will collaborate in working at the Big ACRE, participate in shared workshops and field trips, and be part of a collaborative community food system here on Whidbey Island.
The program runs from January through October, or March through October of 2017 depending on the position. Housing, food, and a stipend are provided.
