Here are some pictures of the results of our Soil Erosion Demo. In this lesson we had live cover crop in one container, mulch in another container and bare soil in the last container. Can you guess what happened when we simulated a hard rain?
In a hard rain, cover crops retain the soil the most, resulting in the clearest of resultant runoff. Mulch covered soil helps retain soil a little bit but not as much as cover crop, resulting in a lower level of soil sediment runoff. Bare soil erodes quickly in a hard rain, resulting in runoff with high levels of soil sediment present, thus very dark runoff.
